This book basicaly talks about the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in detail, but they also talked about the reasons for doing so. Even to this day, the pros and cons of atom-bombing these Japanese cities are still being fiercely debated.

On the day that Hiroshima was bombed, civilian activities were taking place as per usual. School children were going to school, women to the market. The american bombers took the residents of the japanese city by surprise. Thousands of people were killed at the first blast, not to say the people who will die of radiation after the blast.

The book also describes the process of making the bomb. Britain had offered some help in making the bomb by providing some scientist and a technology. The project was named the Manhattan Project and was kept as a top secret.

They tested the world's first nuclear device was exploded at Alamogordo in the New Mexican Desert. The steel tower in which the atom bomb perched was vaporised. The explosion was so great that people standing 10kilometres away was knocked down by the shockwave that was produced. The scientist that witnessed the tremendous explosion said that they felt a chill in their backs, which was not the morning chill. They had created a lot of future problems because of the fact that uranium and plutonium can be made into nuclear bombs.
