My fathers favourite book was 1 Minute Manager that was written by Kenneth H. Blanchard, Spencer Johnson in 1982. According to my father, it teaches managers how to be able to make their staff work to the maximum effectiveness. For example, when the staff under that particular manager has done an exceptionally good job, the manager should praise the employee on the spot, so that the employee will feel encouraged and be more motivated to do well for the next time. In this way, the relations between the superior and employee will improve and be better. But if the employee does badly for an assignment, the manager should also scold the employee, only in this way it is fair to the other employees. I feel that it is a simple but yet effective method in ensuring that employees does their best for every assignment they are assigned to. Read this book, when you have the time to !!
